What is a travel booking engine?

A booking engine is the software that searches supplier inventory, prices options, takes passenger and payment details and confirms the reservation for a travel website, app or API.

For a hotel, a booking engine is often the reservation widget on its own website. For a travel agency or OTA, it is the core platform that connects multiple suppliers and handles the full flow from search to ticketing and servicing.

Core components

A multi-supplier booking engine typically includes supplier adapters, a normalised content model, a search orchestrator with caching, a pricing and markup layer, a booking and payment workflow that is safe to retry, and post-booking servicing. The hardest parts are usually price changes between search and booking, and keeping bookings consistent when a supplier times out mid-transaction.
