What is a fare family (branded fare)?
A fare family (or branded fare) is a named bundle — such as Light, Standard or Flex — that groups a fare with a defined set of services and conditions like baggage, seat selection and change rules.
Airlines introduced fare families to make unbundled pricing understandable and to sell up. Instead of comparing fare rules, the customer compares brands side by side.
Distribution of branded fares
In GDS channels, branded fares are filed and described through industry data, and the GDS can display brand attributes. In NDC channels, the airline returns brands directly inside its offers, often with richer descriptions and media.
Engineering considerations
A platform comparing several sources needs a normalised brand model: what is included (bags, seats, changes, refunds), what is chargeable, and what is not offered. Without it, a “cheapest fare” sort can rank a no-bag fare above a better-value bundle.
